Identifying funds
Identifying the best funds and building a portfolio requires a great deal of experience and can involve more risk, so if you’ve got any doubts contact us for advice.
If you’re willing to invest the time as well as the money, however, it can be a very rewarding managing your own investments. Fund supermarkets such as Cofunds offer a choice from up to 1000 funds. Buying through CoFunds keeps the cost to a minimum, and you can monitor your funds via their site 24 hours a day.
We’ve identified some top performing UK and overseas funds we think you should really consider buying.
Our method for fund selection uses statistical tests to identify a shortlist of funds followed by subjective tests to identify the best of the best:
- Statistical tests – we look at long-term performance of funds (typically 36 months or more) as well as the consistency of the fund’s performance and the levels of risk from month to month
- Subjective tests – we look beyond the statistics at the real story behind the fund. What’s the fund management group’s experience, and what’s their style? Are there any takeovers or other changes planned?
