Update 9th February 2012: If you sort the table by ‘One year cumulative value’ and order by ‘Best Performing’ you can glance along the row to see performance over various periods. What we are looking for is consistency of performance.

 2011 was a tough year for the Japanese economy. The Tsunami, the continued slowdown in the global economy and the Thai floods saw the Nikkei end the year down -12.22%, despite a rebound from early lows. These factors coupled with the continued strength of the Yen, as a result of its perceived haven status, hit corporate profits and peering into 2012 the Japanese economy will likely remain sluggish as
the national finances continue to deteriorate. However, some investors are still attracted to the sector based on value opportunities.

Legg Mason Japan Equity continued to dominate the sector largely thanks to strong performance of internet-related stocks and medical supplier Ship Healthcare. But the fund has a tendency to either significantly outperform or underperform its peers so investors should maintain a watching brief through 2012. For the more cautious Schroder Tokyo offers a better consistency of return.

Would be investors should also look at Japanese Smaller Companies, our “trade for the decade” back in 2010.
