Sterling Corporate Bonds

The current deflationary mix of lower growth, low pay settlements, and high unemployment, combined with an investor dash to safety has been to the benefit of high quality bonds, both sovereign and corporate in 2011.

Unsurprisingly, high quality investment grade corporate bond funds with an emphasis on capital preservation and low volatility, as well as an aversion to bank bonds, such as M&G Corporate Bond, Fidelity Moneybuilder Income and Henderson Sterling Bond top the table below. 

The average yield on UK investment grade debt is around 5%, if we exclude banks and financials the yield drops to 3.9%. As long as the UK maintains its relative safe haven status gilt yields could conceivably be driven lower still, meaning capital appreciation for investment grade bonds. Of course a change in market sentiment over the UK’s own weakening economic outlook, and ability to reduce its own debt, could see yields increase. But with strong domestic demand (the total value of corporate bond and strategic bond funds has almost doubled in the last two years) will continue to support investment grade bond prices in the near term.
